There are certain traditions that transcend generations, quietly evolving while retaining the stories of those who came before. For UAE-born luxury leather house Minimalist, the traditional Emirati art of Khoos weaving provided the inspiration for a special celebration of craftsmanship, identity and womanhood.
Held at Dubai’s historic Al Shindagha Museum, She Is the Story brought together more than 100 guests for an elegant evening marking both Emirati Women’s Day and Minimalist’s tenth anniversary. The setting was particularly fitting: a place dedicated to preserving the UAE’s cultural memory became the backdrop for a brand demonstrating how heritage can be reinterpreted through contemporary luxury.
At the heart of the evening was the unveiling of Um Alyazia and Um Hessa, two new handbag designs inspired by Khoos, the traditional practice of weaving dried palm fronds into functional and decorative objects. Available in Black & Tan, Taupe, Dark Brown and Flame Red, the pieces extend Minimalist’s Khoos-inspired leather collection while bringing the geometry and repetition of the ancient craft into a distinctly modern design language.
“Our signature pattern may read as an ‘M’ at first glance, but its deeper inspiration comes from Khoos weaving, one of the UAE’s most treasured traditional crafts,” explained Ahmad Yousuf, Founder of Minimalist. Rather than reproducing the craft literally, the brand draws upon its precision, rhythm and intricate woven patterns to create something recognisably contemporary.
Materiality is equally important to the Minimalist story. From its earliest leather goods, the house has worked with camel leather sourced from Al Ain, chosen not simply for its connection to the region but also for its durability, distinctive structure and ability to develop character with age. Every piece continues to be handcrafted in the UAE, reinforcing a philosophy rooted in local craftsmanship.
