Undisputed Off-Road Champion: Jeep Wrangler Sahara

By Shereen Shabnam

Driving the Jeep Wrangler Sahara, the off-road champion for everyday urban adventures once was not enough so we tested it again to enjoy its excellent levels of comfort and superior driving dynamics. The Jeep Wrangler Sahara is a one-of-a-kind vehicle that takes you from the roughest terrain to city streets with ease. Even with a modern design, it stays true to the original Jeep DNA with more open-air freedom and advanced technology features in terms of safety and connectivity.

The new Sahara comes with unmatched technical contents offered in three different trim levels in the Middle East: Sport, Sahara and Rubicon, all available in two or four door configurations. We had the four door Sahara in Army green colour which turned heads in every part of Dubai we went to.

INTERIOR

The interior of the Jeep Wrangler combines authentic styling, versatility, and functionality, in addition to a more stylish and comfortable cabin, thanks to the use of high-quality materials and finishes.  It is modern with leather-trimmed seats, leather-wrapped dashboard with contrast stitching, new customizable 7-inch Driver Information Digital Cluster Display and of course the Uconnect® system 4C NAV with the 8.4-inch touchscreen.

Directly below the touchscreen are functional features such as climate and volume control knobs and media connectivity ports. The display is full-colour while integrated buttons on the steering wheel control audio, voice, and speed functions for convenience.

It may be a tough looking Jeep suitable for the rough terrain but we found the new Sahara comfortable inside with the adjustable bolster and lumbar support plus the lengthened arm rests for better comfort. The two USB ports up front and two in the back seat, the standard 12-volt accessory outlets and the 230-volt AC outlet kept our devices charged up.

EXTERIOR

The sculptural design aesthetic of the Jeep Sahara is immediately recognizable with its traditional Jeep design cues. The round headlights, seven-slot grille, trapezoidal wheel arches, visible hinges, folding windshield removable doors and open-air configurations with hard top or soft top makes the exterior design bold and rugged.

The larger windows give outward visibility, especially when on extreme trails. The Jeep design team gave the legendary seven-slot grille a more modern look that now sees both of the outer grille slats intersecting with the headlights, paying homage to the legendary CJ model. The top of the keystone-shaped grille has been gently swept back for improved aerodynamics.

The LED headlights and fog lights feature crisp white lighting that adds to the Wrangler’s distinctive look. The daytime running lights are positioned on the front of the trapezoidal wheel flares. From behind, traditional square tail lamps feature available LED lighting. Different windshield and top solutions allow customers to choose multiple configuration possibilities.

PERFORMANCE & DRIVE ASSIST

Driver and passenger safety in the Sahara is assured with an array of active and passive safety features such as Blind-Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkSense rear park assist, ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, electronic stability control (ESC) with ERM (Electronic Roll Mitigation), Electronic Stability Control, Antilock Brake System (ABS), Brake Assist, four standard airbags, body-on-frame construction and more. All Jeep Wrangler grades are Trail rated which means they are superior on Traction, Articulation, Ground Clearance, Manoeuvrability and Water Froding.

We had the 3.6-liter V6 upgraded Pentastar engine Power with 285 horsepower Torque and 347 Nm Transmission. The eight-speed automatic transmission optimizes the engine output while on the trails or gives smooth, efficient power delivery at highway speeds. The 4×4 system features a full-time mode that will automatically switch from 2WD to 4WD when conditions dictate relying on internal wheel speed and traction control sensors.

VERDICT

Jeep Wrangler has always stood out for its functionality and has the ability to give drivers any adventure they desire with utmost ease. The Jeep Sahara is no exception. Offering a host of powerful adventure drives, clever storage solutions and DIY kits to make the car tailor made to driver and passenger needs. There is a functional “screws and bolts” organizer at the bottom of the trunk and a tool kit with instructions inside the central armrest. Everything onboard the iconic Jeep has been engineered for easy, practical open-air drive adventures as well as comfortable city drives.
