The orange McLaren 720S that I drove around Dubai for a few days was ferociously fast, beautifully made and surprisingly great for everyday use with sharp handling, pure driver engagement and contemporary luxury.
The new McLaren 720S is born of the McLaren design philosophy: everything for a reason. The radical shape is inspired by the teardrop, nature’s perfect aerodynamic form. It takes this shape because it helps to deliver superlative performance and aerodynamic efficiency, keeping with the DNA of a McLaren.
Every design detail in the 720S is created to improve performance and comes with enhanced comfort. At the core of the design of the 720S is 360° visibility that transforms the drive. An advanced composite structure allows for much slimmer A-pillars and glazed C-pillars. The whole upper structure flows effortlessly into the bodywork.
Form and function are inseparable – While the headlights that define the face of the McLaren 720S are unmistakable, their deep-set and sculpted design also features integrated air intakes.
Guiding air around the lights and into the radiators. The iconic dihedral doors add unrivalled drama while optimising accessibility to the cabin and rear storage area.
The bodysides are sculpted and muscular. Free from vents, scoops and details. Shark-like in their fluid simplicity, the fast-flowing air is guided around the A-pillars and into the rear air intakes.
At the rear, the 720S is defined by powerful haunches, always ready to leap. They blend elegantly with the fully integrated rear spoiler. Maintaining the feel of extreme dynamic function and uncluttered, sculpted form.
On the road, the ride was remarkably smooth and serene. There was pure magic and an organic connection between car and driver. I thoroughly enjoyed each ride as the 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 offered relentless power at every corner.
The engine delivers 720PS and 770Nm of torque and 0-60mph takes just 2.8 seconds. The 124mph arrives in an astonishing 7.8 seconds as the 720S is all about the way you can use power, balance and accessibility.
The McLaren 720S is one incredibly fast and efficient supercar offering unrelenting power, acceleration and performance.
