Shereen Shabnam
Perched dramatically atop the limestone cliffs of Jimbaran Bay, AYANA Bali is more than a resort; it is a destination in itself, a place where luxury, heritage, and natural beauty converge to create experiences that feel at once indulgent and deeply grounding. My recent stay at the AYANA Villas was a journey into the heart of Balinese refinement, a blend of privacy, artistry, and contemporary design that left me utterly renewed.
The villa I called home was an expansive sanctuary complete with a private pool overlooking lush gardens and the ocean beyond. Sliding glass doors filled the space with natural light and breezes, a reminder that here, nature and architecture are designed to exist in harmony.
Mornings began slowly: a dip in the pool as the sun rose over the cliffs, followed by coffee and jamu tea (local herbal tea) on the terrace in blissful seclusion. Every detail of the villa, from hand-carved woodwork to marble bathrooms spoke of a deep respect for craftsmanship and sustainability.
THE SAKA MUSEUM: CULTURE AT THE HEART OF AYANA
While the villas embody serenity, the SAKA Museum on the AYANA estate offered a striking counterpoint: energy, culture, and discovery. Recently recognized among the World’s Most Beautiful Museums 2025 by Prix Versailles, SAKA celebrates Bali’s living heritage through architecture and immersive exhibitions.
Wandering its galleries, I found myself captivated by the way tradition and innovation are intertwined. It was an experience that felt both intellectually enriching and emotionally stirring. It was a reminder that AYANA is not only a retreat but also a cultural steward.
A CULINARY VOYAGE
Dining at the different restaurants at AYANA was every bit as memorable as the surroundings. Breakfast every morning reminded me of my time viving in Asia for nine years as I savoured traditional breakfast items. One evening, I indulged in an extraordinary seafood meal, where the freshest catch of the day was prepared with subtlety and flair, highlighting the ocean’s natural bounty.
The estate’s diverse restaurants each offered a distinct narrative: from refined Asian flavors to Mediterranean-inspired menus, every meal was a journey in itself. Evenings lingered late, with the sound of waves crashing below and the scent of frangipani carried on the breeze.
What sets AYANA apart is the holistic nature of its luxury. It is not just the elegant design of its villas, the impeccable service, or the range of world-class dining options. It is the way each element, the architecture, culture, cuisine, and nature is thoughtfully layered into a seamless narrative of belonging.
Whether floating in a private pool, exploring Balinese heritage at SAKA, or savoring a freshly prepared seafood feast, every moment felt both deeply personal and profoundly connected to the spirit of Bali. AYANA Bali for me was an invitation to experience the island’s essence in all its richness.
For travelers who seek privacy and indulgence but also meaning and cultural resonance, this estate that offeres different types of hotels, vilas and experiences is a sanctuary and an unforgettable chapter in the story of luxury travel.
