A Tribute to Heritage and Progress: Celebrating Malta National Day

Shereen Shabnam

As we gather to celebrate Malta National Day in 2024 this month, we commemorate a remarkable journey of independence, resilience, and growth. This year marks significant anniversaries for Malta: the attainment of independence in 1964, the establishment of the Republic in 1974, the cessation of British military presence in 1979, and Malta’s accession to the European Union in 2004. Each milestone reflects the spirit and determination of the Maltese people, who have transformed their nation into a beacon of peace, stability, and opportunity in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

With a rich history and a vibrant culture, Malta stands proud, showcasing its achievements and inviting the world to explore its unique offerings. From its picturesque landscapes to its thriving economy, Malta continues to attract visitors and investors alike, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Our team looks into what makes this year special by featuring a message from the dynamic Maria Camilleri Calleja, Ambassador of Malta to the UAE and Permanent Representative of Malta to IRENA and organisations that are supporting the celebrations.

Malta: The Road to Independent and Sovereign Statehood

In 1964, Malta attained Independence from the British Empire. Ten years later it become a Republic with a Maltese Head of State, Professor Anthony Mamo as its first President of Malta. In 1979, Malta ceased to be a British military base, and in 2004, Malta joined the European Union.  In forty years of political, economic, diplomatic and social development, Malta morphed from follower to leader with Peace, Security, Stability and Prosperity as its banner.

This year 2024, marks these Four Anniversaries.  Proud of their history and heritage, the Maltese people spurred by visionary and ambitious leaders, strived to make their nation among the most sought after in the Euro-Mediterranean region and in the world.  Be it for the financial market, the ease by which commerce can be done, the opportunity to invest, the fortitude of entrepreneurs to venture beyond Malta’s shores, the beauty of its culture, the sublime experience of its historical sites, or simply the balanced mix of work and life, the Maltese islands and its friendly people offer an experience for both as a safe, secure and peaceful existence as well as active, lucrative and expanding business contacts.

At the end of 2024, Malta completes its two-year tenure as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.  An experience, not without its hurdles, Malta has defined itself as a beacon of peace and a champion for human dignity around the most important table in the whole world.  Former President George Vella, the Honourable Prime Minister Robert Abela, and Foreign Minister Ian Borg as well as other Maltese Ministers have had the opportunities to lead important initiatives and signature events to advance security and stability where there is conflict, suffering and strife. In November 2023, Malta also spearheaded an important UN Security Council resolution calling for humanitarian pauses in Gaza, to enable the safe passage of humanitarian aid.

In 2024, Maltese Foreign Minister Ian Borg is also the Chair-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the largest regional security organization in the world. Malta was unanimously voted to chair this organization during some of its most challenging times, following unanimous approval by its 57 participating states.

Set in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is the perfect crossroads between Europe and Africa.  In the past 25 years, it has also marked its position as a bridge between West and East, where, like in centuries gone by, the unassuming traveller discovers a safe port, a peaceful getaway yet also a connection point – a melting pot, if you wish – for nationalities and cultures to fuse and synergise.

Confined to a land area of 317 square kilometres, Malta offers more than meets the eye.  It is a trans-shipment hub, a digital and technology centre for start-ups and tech, a test bed for new technologies and pharmaceuticals, a world centre for maritime studies, a residency option for various nationalities, and an investment co-location point.  As a member in the European Union family, it offers a solid legal architecture of European laws which secure both investor and end-user, access to the Single Market, and at the same time, excellent connectivity to North Africa and other African markets.

The Embassy of Malta in the United Arab Emirates, together with twenty-eight government entities and Maltese companies, is honoured and privileged to partner for the third year running with Global Trend Monitor, to bring you MORE MALTA to the UAE, simultaneously as it pursues its efforts in offering the UAE with an excellent proposition that promises the amplification of a continued relationship of friendship and prosperity for both countries.
