An Exceptional Experience: San Diego

By Shereen Shabnam

San Diego is full of life during the day and gets even more vibrant at night. As ‘America’s Finest City’, the warm friendly disposition filters down to almost everyone you encounter on the streets and the vibe comes across more laid-back than most cities in the USA.

San Diego is full of world-famous attractions so my visit there with a group of friends saw us exploring the meandering streets, the outlet mall near the exhibition centre where we were based and we barely had time for the zoo, the museums of Balboa Park or the many beaches that people enjoy in San Diego.

As the eighth largest city in the United State, San Diego shares a border with Mexico. It boasts a wide variety of neighborhoods and communities dotted around beach towns, downtown business centre and historical areas. Tourism is a big income earner as people come for the bustling beaches full of surfers, theme parks, art galleries, museums, golf courses and restaurants.

My first night in San Diego was spent savouring the local dishes and the seafood dishes were a true delight topped with a selection of spicy sauces the city is known for. We walked around Gaslamp District filled with Victorian themed buildings and shops, visited Little Italy and a farmers’ market on a Sunday.

One night, while heading to dinner, we came across a large entourage of cyclists who went through the town complete with loud music and had their bicycles lit up in different coloured lights. It was almost like seeing a town procession and bought the entire city to life for a few hours.

Noteworthy places to visit include the San Diego Zoo, Seaport Village, Seaworld theme Park, the craft shops, find time to hunt for the spiciest chilli sauces in the various shops, head to the Aircraft Museum or have a leisurely walk along Harbour Drive. The speed boat adventures in San Diego are a lot of fun as well.

San Diego is great to visit all year round. The best way to see the city is to get on a Hop on hop off bus and I loved the Old Town Trolley Tours. They take you to the best places and let you explore each attraction at your own pace.
